MINISTERS' SPLEEN
WAR ON PRESS SUGGESTED CANBERRA, June 14. Unsuccessful attempts to persuade the full Cabinet'to enter a "grudge war" against the Australian newspapers arc believed to have been made by the Minister of Information, Mr. Cahvcll, under whose administration the recent suppressions of newspapers occurred, and the Minister of Transport, Mr. Ward.
Political correspondents say the Ministers submitted three main proposals. One, that the supply of newsprint be restricted. Two, that an intensive comb-out of newspaper staffs should be made. Three, that a tax be placed on advertisements.
The proposals are reported to have been rejected by the full Cabinet. The "Sydney Morning Herald" correspondent says: "The plan can be considered as on the shelf—recognised by an overwhelming majority of the. Ministers as an expression of the type of personal spleen which cannot be permitted to enter into the business of administration."
