THIRD-PARTY RATES

REDUCTIONS MADE

WARNING TO TAXI MEN

Reductions in the third-party insurance premium rates applying to four classes of vehicles for the year 1944----45 were announced today by the Minister of Transport (Mr. O'Brien). The third-party premium for motor-cycles has been reduced from 20/- to 16/-, for private cars from 16/- to 15/-; for tractors from 7/- to 3/-, and for trailers from 4/- to %/-. The Minister said that all the rates were based on the experience of the various insurance companies.

"I would like, however, to take this opportunity of commenting on the premium rate for taxis," said the Minister. "Unless there is a very marked decline in the claims made in respect of third-party damage where taxis are involved it will be necessary for me to consider materially increasing the premiums paid by these vehicles. i

"The matter is one for the taxi men themselves, and I hope that as a result of careful and considerate driving it may be possible to reduce the premium instead of increasing it."
