MAXIMUM FINE

ILLICIT SPIRITS CASE

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A maximum fine of £500 was imposed on Clarence Seaton Thomas, 30, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court this morning to being concerned in the unlawful making of spirits. Three 40-gallon drums containing molasses wash and several dozen bottles of whisky and gin formed part of the exhibits.

In fixing the penalty, the Magistrate, Mr. Levvey, said that offences of this type were serious at any time, but more so now. The one thing that saved Thomas from imprisonment was the fact that he was apparently not the only principal concerned.
