MR. APPLETON MAYOR

MOST DEFINITE WIN

MARGIN OF 9595 VOTES

Mr. Will Appleton (Citizens) had a most definite win in the Mayoral contest, with a vote of 29,884, giving him a margin of 9595 over Mr. James Roberts, president of the New Zealand Labour Party, who polled 20,289 votes. That Mr. Apple ton would be elected was evident early in the evening, and even the block Labour vote at the wharf and the Labour majorities at the Trades Hall and some of the outer polling places did not promise any effective overhauling, for his polling place margins were too consistently wide for a few large Labour majorities to overcome. With each half-hour of counting, Mr. Appleton's position improved, and out of 112 polling places he had majorities in 85. The number of informal votes, 660, was large for a straight-out issue between, two candidates. The results of the two previous elections were: 1941, T. C. A. Hislop (C), 19,851; R. McKeen, M.P. (L.), 10,926; majority for Hislop, 8925.' 1938, Hislop (C), 24,368; C. H. Chapman, M.P. (L.), 18,198; majority for Hislop, 6170. Mr. Appleton also topped the Harbour Board poll, with 29,349 votes; Mr. Roberts polled 20,463 votes for the Harbour Board, so that there was a close parallel between them on that issue as well. . Mr. Appleton's clear win in the Mayoralty showed the way the whole city elections were to go, with the return of Citizens' ticket condidates to all the seats at the tables of the City Council, Hospital Board, and Harbour Board.
