(For Mayor) ■ In 1915 Mr. Roberts became secretary of the National Organisation of Waterside workers, retaining the position until elected to the Waterfront Control Commission. In the intervening period ho shouldered a tremendous responsibility for the industrial, workers of this country and conducted some of the most important arbitration cases ever held.' As leader of the Labour repre- ' eentatives of the 1929 National Industrial Conference, he was a strong advocate for the establishment of secondary industries. The Massey, Coates and Ward Governments sought his help in many important '. industrial • commissions, and in 1930 he represented New Zealand at the International Labour' Conference at Geneva —the first delegate to represent this country. In the same year he represented New Zealand workers at Confer- ; ences in Stockholm, Amsterdam, Great Britain, Ireland and Canada. He has completed seven years as National President of the New Zealand Labour Party, a position he has filled with great credit to himself and proved a tower of strength in the dark days of uncertainty when war broke on the country. As chairman of the New Zealand Worker Printing and Publishing Co., Ltd., he has helped build the Standard Press to a wide sphere of activity. Mr. Roberts, at present, holds the responsible position of Waterfront ControlCommissioner. He has been a member of the National Patriotic Fund Board since its inception.
