FARMERS' THREAT
PROTECTION OF WOMEN P.A. DANNEVIRKE, This Day. The southern Hawke's Bay branch of the Farmers' Union yesterday passed the following motion: "That this annual meeting of farmers considers that if another deplorable incident similar to that which took place in Poverty Bay recently is enacted upon any of our womenfolk in our provincial district this meeting pledges itself to visit upon the officer or officers concerned in sending delinquents to the district, brutal punishment." The mover, Mr. H. Stratford (Norsewood), said that' the-provincial executive had made representations to the Department of Justice some time ago regarding the necessity of protecting womenfolk in lonely country places but did not receive a very satisfactory reply; in fact, the executive was snubbed. It was time that drastic action was taken to ensure adequate protection of lonely women in country [districts. ._ . .-_, ____^,_^ J .
