DAY OF CONFERENCE
THE WESTFIELD DISPUTE PA AUCKLAND, May 25. No work was done on the beef slaughtering floor of the Westfleld freezing works today, when conferences took place between the representatives of the men and the management and the wage commissioner, Mr. C. L. Hunter, on a claim for increased wages for three men employed in the cattle-knocking pit. Work was ceased by 80 employees in the beef slaughtering department yesterday morning following an accident to one of the men employed in the pit. Requests were made for.inspection of the gear involved in the mishap and for a higher wage for the men working with it. Adjustments authorised by the Government inspector of machinery were completed by the company this morning, when it was expected that operations would be resumed. The men, however, insisted that the wages claim be considered, and the wage commissioner met representatives in conference. It was agreed that the men resume work while further consideration is given to suggestions that the men be paid on a piecework basis. Agreement was not reached till well on in the forenoon, and, following a meeting of the men, it was decided, as a number of the workers had gone home, to defer the complete resumption of killing till torr.orrow morninE.
