U.S.A. CONTRACT W N.Z. P.A. ■ DUNEDIN, May 12. : The shipbuilding controller, Mr. J. Fletcher, announced tonight that a con- . tract for eight cargo vessels for the United States navy had been placed with Stevenson and Cook, Port Chalm-' ers, 'and the first two keels had been laid. These eight ships were part of a contract-for 32, the remainder of which were being constructed in Auckland. "It is interesting to note," Mr. Fletcher added, "that 75 ocean-going vessels have been built-in New Zealand , during the past two years." * !
