The youngsters who : -man the motoi torpedo-boats, gun-boats, and ■ motor launches in the Mediterranean are rather subdued,- for they have jusl heard that Temp. Sub-Lieut. John Norman Broad, R.N.Z.N.V.R., aged 24, of Duriedin, has been killed, says the Mediterranean correspondent of. the "News of the World." , ■' Lieut. Broad, who was a former weight-lifting champion of New Zealand, was a legendary figure, for nc man in Mediterranean waters could match him in strength. He was leading two torpedo-boats to attack a con-. voy in moonlight. • They set fire to a big schooner and then turned to attack another. - Just as Lieut.. Broad. gave the order to fire torpedoes his boat was struck by ah incendiary shell under the starboard torpedo tube. Lieut. Broad and an Englishman being killed. The second torpedo-boat attracted the enemy fire away from Lieut. Broad's boat, which fired c vicious parting shot. r The New Zealander and the Englishman were buried at sea.
