ACTIVE ROLE WANTED
LEAVING AUSTRALIAN ARMY (By Tolegraph—Press Association—Copyrlßbt.) •SYDNEY, May 1. The complaint that he had been sidetracked to Western Australia and not given the opportunity of applying the costly lessons learned in Malaya was made today by Lieutenant-General Gordon Bennett on his arrival here. He said that after his escape from Singapore he had exposed the weakness of the Brisbane Line theory in time to have the- Australian defence plans altered so that Australians fought in New Guinea and not on the outskirts of Brisbane. / "Being Australia's senior corps commander, I feel it is my right to.be given the opportunity of returning with the A.I.F. to Malaya and enemyoccupied islands," stated General Bennett. "I have been denied that- right and relegated to an administrative command for the duration of the war. I cannot accept this, and therefore am returning to civil life, "Given the opportunity I will definitely return to a suitable army post, but not to an armchair job.' After General Bennett has obtained his formal clearance from the Army ne has declared that he will speak on Army matters with "greater freedom and vigour."
