AUSTERITY CLOTHING
MODIFICATIONS WELCOMED
"Manufacturers welcome the position that has enabled the Minister of Supply to modify the simplified clothing regulations," said Mr. Lan Matheson, president of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, when commenting on the Minister's announcement of the relaxation-of restrictions. "Despite contentions to the contrary, the regulations have, in their ramifications over the whole trade, effected a definite saving in cloth, and this economy is of value to the national effort.
"At the time the Regulations were introduced the supplies of cloth were acutely short, and every conservation measure was required. Realising this, manufacturers had, generally speaking, submitted with good grace to the restrictions, and were prepared to comply as long as there was universal compliance and the necessity for their continuance was evident.
Doubtless the Minister's announcement will be received with pleasure by the consumers, and it is our joboutside of war production—to meet the wishes of the consuming public. As certain aspects of the relaxation facilitate labour-saving, the present announcement will be particularly welcome to manufacturers at a time when the labour shortage has become so much more acute."
