FIGHTING JAPANESE

BRITISH STUDY METHODS

Rec. 9 a.m. MELBOURNE,. April 7. "The Australian soldier is doing a magnificent job in New Guinea. He is a superb fighting man, full of courage, determination, and endurance, and is very well led." This was the unanimous summing-up of a group of young British Army officers who have returned to Australia after spending three months in New Guinea. The party consisted of about 50 officers from the British Army in India, who arrived in Australia last November to study the Australian methods of jungle warfare and training. They did months of training in Queensland and then went to New Guinea, one group going to the Ramu Valley and another to the Huon Peninsula. Most of the officers saw frontline action while in New Guinea, and one was wounded. All had spent about three years in Burma and India, and some took part in General Alexander's fighting retreat through Burma in 1942. The party is now on its way back to India and Burma to pass on the lessons learned in New Guinea.
