THE CITY'S FUTURE
MORE INDUSTRIES NEEDED Looking forward to the time when work' would not be as easy to get in 1 Wellington as it was today, Councillor W. H. Stevens, addressing the Karori West Progressive Association last.night, said that more industries would be necessary. Private enterprise when the' war was over would have to assume, the responsibility of providing most of the employment. At present industries were going anywhere except to Wellington, because it had not the facilities or the room for planning. The city was overbuilt, a"nd Te Aro Flat could not be cleared unless there were other houses for people to go to. The boundaries of Wellington must be extended, as both more land and more industries were essential. In England before'the war local bodies were buying and developing land, and placing it at the disposal of industries on favourable terms, just to get the industries in their districts. . It was the council's function to give every encouragement, and finance if necessary, to those prepared to spend part of their own money to get homes. That was part of the plan of Mr. Appleton's team, of which he was one.
