LEFT TO WALK OUT

JOINED PARTISAN TROOPS

Included among New Zealand soldiers who recently returned home were a number of prisoners of war who were in camps in Northern Italy when Italy capitulated. When the news came through, one stated in an interview, the Italian guards put on their clothes and went home, leaving the prisoners a free hand. They immediately made plans to join the Yugo-Slav partisans in the mountains near the border, and by the time they were guided there by friendly peasants and partisans, the party numbered 24( The partisan troops were , well organised, but poorlyequipped, having little food and no boots. They gave every help they could to the New Zealanders, who fought alongside them for some months, and eventually made for the shores of the Adriatic and took ship to southern Italy, where they rejoined the Allied forces.

These men, along with others who returned sick and wounded and on furlough, were welcomed by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) and other members of the Government.
