BUS DRIVERS' STRIKE
KHANDALLAH SERVICES
A meeting of residents of" the : Onslow- Homebush-Cashmere-Khandal-r-lah district was held at Onslow Road [to consider the position regarding the of bus transport in the disHrict as a result of the bus drivers' I strike on Sundays. Mr. F. G. Temm, ? chairman of the Khandallah State | Tenants' Association, presided. Mr. D. ? Lagan was elected acting secretary. h The chairman said it was not desired • that the meeting should discuss at the | present stage the merits, of the case or Khe rights and wrongs of the dispute; Hndeed, he considered the meeting was fnot competent to adopt a judicial atti- ■'. tude in regard to the dispute, for it ;.\vas not conversant with all the facts, fend there were two sides to every The residents of the district, fhowever, were vitally affected, and j were the innocent victims of the disI'pute. Much inconvenience was being ■ experienced owing to the total suspen- [ sion of the services on Sundays. It was Hhe wish and earnest desire of the resif dents that their claims be considered fin the matter, and that the question be | resolved as early as ■ possible and the : j>resent deadlock be ended. Mr. F. McComish said that the meeti ing should first of all declare itself ; fully behind the bus drivers, and.that j'the meeting should not ask for the ('restoration of the services unless the {.drivers' demands were agreed to.
\ Mr. W. J. Arcus supported the chair- \ man's attitude, and said it was not ■possible for the meeting to declare it- ' self on the merits of the dispute. The ■meeting was for the purpose of try"ing to resolve the deadlock and put the travelling public's case.
; ■ Mr. ' Temm moved the following motion:—"That this meeting of resi- ; dents of Khandallah, Onslow, and jHomebush districts who are dependent ton bus transport, while not desiring to {■take sides in the dispute, expresses fconcern at the present position regarding the hold up of Sunday services, fdesires to direct attention to the lack I' of transport facilities for persons r specially required to work on Sundays Ist such operations as wharf and shipfping work and to the larger number [of people in the district who are [totally dependent on Sunday bus transport to attend church services, and '• exhorts both parties to the dispute to 'endeavour to find an early solution '■ whereby .the public affected may be relieved of the* present serious hardship (■and. inconvenience and may obtain the Iservices it is entitled to, and that this ■ resolution be forwarded to the Ministter of Railways and to the secretary i';of the Bus Drivers' Union." Mr. Arcus /seconded the resolution, which was •carried.
? On the motion of Mr. W. F. Smith>scn, seconded by Mr. P. W. Galvin, itha following motion was also car- ■ ried:-—"That this meeting appoints a i committee comprising Messrs. F. G. , Temm, P. M. Butler, F. McComish, W. IF. Srnithson. and E. E. Brown, to keep <in touch wtih the position and to re- ; present the third party, namely, the residents, and travelling public, and ,to solicit the offices of the member for •the district. Mr. H. E.
