DISPUTED HIGH GROUND Rec. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, Jan. 27. Thirsting for revenge after their setback yesterday at Monte Croce, the French launched attacks and at the point of the bayonet drove the Germans from important high ground north-east of Cassino, says a correspondent at Allied headquarters. A fierce battle is going on for Belvedere Peak, 2500 feet high, five miles north of Cassino. . ~, The Americans are progressing with the cleaning up of minefields and obstacles and are crossing flooded ditches against most active enemy fire. Cassino is still in enemy hands airthough a patrol entered the outskirts and retired. . On the Adriatic flank action has been limited to intensiye patrolling. Bad weather has limited air operations, but light bombers attacked road and rail objectives at Ceccano, Cisterna, and Itri. Fighter patrols were maintained over the beach-head and battlefront. Three enemy aircraft were destroyed, and two of our| are missing. Ceccano is on the CassinoRome railway some 50 miles from the capital. Cisterna is on the Appian Way, and Itri is near Formia. —8.0.
