NO RACEHORSES

RAIL TRANSPORT

EFFECT ON MEETINGS

Goods traffic which will not be carried by the railways under the permit system includes racehorses. Because of the restrictions imposed in respect to railway transport, the Wellington Trotting Club already has decided not to proceed with its Summer Meeting on February 5, and it is reported that it is likely that other clubs, racing and trotting, in some districts, may also find it impracticable to hold meetings. The position is regarded with concern by the officials of some clubs. Under the restrictions the livestock traffic to be carried is to be limited Ito animals required for slaughter. ON ACCEPTED LIST. Other goods which will be accepted include military equipment and stores of all descriptions; materials for use in defence construction; lime and manures for agricultural purposes consigned direct to farmers and chaff for feeding livestock (but the quantities must in every instance be limited to the minimum to cover bare necessities); chaff, animal foods, and fodder; lime, salt, and meat bags for freezing works; lime for tanneries and gasworks; green hides and skins; posts, stakes, wire, seeds, and agricultural machinery consigned direct to farmers; natural manures; returned empties (such as fish boxes, fish casks, butter and cheese boxes, etc.), to be used for conveyance of foodstuffs and other essentials; shooks for making fruit cases, ! butter boxes, cheese crates, and casks; foodstuffs, household requisites, milk, cream, butter, and cheese; machinery and supplies for freezing works; grain (for immediate gristing), potatoes and other vegetables and fruit; coal, coke, and firewood; household furniture and effects of persons moving, but not new furniture; benzine and other motor spirits, oils, and greases for lubricating purposes; also any other articles of a similar description under the above headings. The railways will also take frozen meat and wool consigned direct to I ships for shipment; rabbits for freezing and canning; beer, wines, and spirits; oil for spraying purposes; gas in cylinders for welding purposes; repair parts for motor vehicles, agricultural machinery, etc.; travellers' samples limited to lewt; waste paper and waste rubber. MAY USE DISCRETION. In respect of other traffic which appears to be of an essential nature, railway district officers may exercise their discretion in the matter of accepting or declining it, after fully satisfying themselves as to the position, except that should such traffic involve additional train mileage it must not-be accepted without first obtaining authority from head office. According to the schedule, bricks, sand, cement, iron, steel, hardware, timber and building materials (other than for defence construction), are not to be accepted unless required for some essential purpose.
