N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS
JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE
P.A. AUCKLAND, This Day. I The New Zealand swimming championships opened today. Heats were decided during the day, and at night the Olympic Pool at Newmarket was packed with spectators. No New Zealand records were broken, ' but the intermediate grade in both boys' and girls' events provided a high standard of swimming. The outstanding feature was the success in the 100 yds women's breaststroke championship of Miss M. Pasalich (Auckland), who beat Miss \V. Dunn (Otago), holder of the title since 1938. •In the diving events the Otago representatives won all three places, and added considerably towards thai { aincc's lead for the War Memorial Shield k ..a. Before the first evenl uiere was an impressive march-past of all competitors, and the "Last Post" was sounded as the crowd rose to pay tribute to swimmers who have paid the supreme sacrifice during this war. Points for the War .Memorial Shield at the conclusion of the first day were as follows: — Otago 32, Wellington 14, Southland 13, Canterbury 12, Auckland 9, Wanganui 1.
