RUGBY, January 18. { Figures of German imports of steel, wolfram, tin, and chrome have been given by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Warfare, in reply to a question in the House of Commons. Mr. Dingle Foot said: "In 1943, in addition to small quantities of special steels, Germany imported from Sweden approximately 20 per cent, of her total consumption of iron one. * The House will, however, have observed from recent announce- ,' ments in the Press that Swedish de- ) liveries of iron ore will be substan- ; tially lowered in 1944. 1 "In 1943 Germany obtained from . Portugal about 50 per cent, of her total I consumption of wolfram, from Spain about 40 per cent, of her wolfram and an insignificant quantity of tin, and from Turkey, in terms of chrome oxide content, about 30 per cent, of her ," chrome." He added: "The House is already aware of the steps which are being . taken to prevent wolfram .in the ] Iberian Peninsula and chrome in Turkey from reaching Germany. It would '' not be in the public interest to announce what other steps the British Government is taking or contemplates * taking in the future."—B.O.W. |
