Torpedo- and dive-bombers with strong escort based on the Solomons attacked Simpson Harbour at midday. Direct hits with 10001b and 20001b bombs were scored on eight cargo ships, three of which exploded and sank. Two others were left burning and probably sinking. Three others were seriously damaged. Enemy planes raided the Empress Augusta Bay area, causing minor casualties and damage to our ground forces. Ground forces crossed the Torokina River and occupied positions near the east of the lagoon.
