BENEFICIAL RAIN

GALLOPING AT TRENTHAM

Intermittent rain of a light but steady nature fell during the night at Trentham, and again set in at about 5.15 this morning, when the early workers made their appearance on the tracks. Whereas the plough had been the popular track earlier, all the work was on No. 2 grass this morning. The course proper is benefiting by the rain and is in perfect order. Smart Effort.—The two Metropolitan Handicap candidates Beau Vaals and Whackie were partners over five furlongs, the former drawing clear in the run home to be two and a half lengths in front in 1.2, after taking 13 l-ssec for the first furlong. It was an attractive effort on the part of Beau Vaals, even though he was kicked out. Juveniles.—Black Simon and Well Armed jumped away at the five-fur-long post, picking up .Sunstream at the half-mile peg, and over the last bit Black Simon was doing it best to beat Sunstream, with Well Armed some distence back. Black Simon, winner of the Juvenile Handicap on the second day at Awapuni. completed the last half-mile in 50sec. Broke Raggedly.—Fortune's Smije and Cracroft were to have galloped together, but they broke badly and were never on terms. Fortune's Smile was timed to come home the last three furlongs in 40sec, and Cracroft took 1.35 for seven furlongs. In Favour.—Corday, who has come into favour for the W.R.C. Handicap was restricted to a six-furlong gallop alone. The Man's Pal gelding was travelling smoothly throughout to complete in 1.16. Pulled Hard.—Pulling hard all the way, Royal Merit held off Jeff, who was under a hard ride over the last furlong, to beat his fellow-northerner. They ran the first furlong in ISsec, three in 37sec, half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and Royal Merit ran the mile in 1.43 «;,being a len §th and a half clear. Went Separately.—Scottish Dale who was to have gone with Theolateral, broke away on his own to run seven furlongs in 1.29 4-5. The grey followed later to run six furlongs in 1.15 4-5, the first three in 38 4-ssec. Comfortably.—The Fitzherbert Hancap winner, Plassida, quickened up the closing portion of five furlongs to complete m 1.5 Jr. She was travelling very nicely at the post. Not Serious.—Black Plato, Sedgemere, and Roianui were partners over fiv. e furlongs in 1.6 1-5, but were not f-^vi to £ lye °, f their best > and were together throughout. Stablemates.—Sunblaze had the Trial Plate candidate Entertainer as a companion over half a mile. They crossed me line on terms, running the distance in 51sec. TnSS a& ed , We^T Three local hacks, Lord Darnley, Maharajah, and Genghiz Khan, were associated in a six-furlong task running the last five in 1.3 with >Lord Darnley holding off Maharajah. Very Honest.—Alone, Alchemy, who claims a great record for consistency, worked smoothly over six furlongs coming home the last half-mile in 52sec. Brilliant.—Master Ted registered the smartest half-mile of the morning by returning • 48isec, beating Theiolyn by a couple of lengths. Will Appreciate.—Poutatau, who will appreciate the softening of the track slipped over five furlongs unaccompanied in 1.2 1-5. Indefinite.—Engaged in both the Gamp and Douro Handicaps, the programme to be followed by Te Awe Awe is indefinite. She worked quite attractively over a mile in 1.43, the first half-mile in 53sec, picking up Some Sing over the last half. They finished on terms. Drew Clear.—Pensacola finished ahead of Hormuz, with Montosorrie further back, at the close of five furlongs in 1.3 4-5, the last half-mile in 50sec. Novices.—Ballymain showed he is improving by beating Red Fury and another over five furlongs, running the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec. .. S/cratchy.—Lou Rosa, who moved somewhat scratchily, went with Foxola over seven furlongs, the last six in U7.1-5.-and the-last half-mile in 52sec. Another W.R.C. Handicap candidate, The Raker, who was restricted to pace work, is also, showing signs of his racing. Good Showing.—Rink, partnered by Palfrey, was going the better at the close of a mile task in 1.43 1-5. Third place-getter in the Wellington Cup, Rink should make a bold showing in the W.R.C. Handicap. Welcomed.—The advent of rain was welcomed by the trainer of Killeymoon, although the Leighon gelding required 1.29 2-5 to complete seven furlongs. Sound Pace.—Broiefield jumped away at the mile, and a quarter peg to run 15sec to the furlong for the first mile. Speeded up- over the last portion, he

completed the last half-mile in 50sec. He is a good type of horse. Hack Trio. —Social Climber, Lord Broiefort, and Sea Quex were associated over seven furlongs in 1.30 1-5, and two southerners, Arustra and Irish Note, took 1.31 for a similar task, the last' half-mile in 53sec. Immediately following, Bascule and Voltaire ran a mile, requiring 1.33 3-5 for the last seven furlongs. Nodding.—High Ideal and Silvio slipped over half a mile in 49sec. It was a good effort, for at this stage the track was becoming greasy. On pulling up High Ideal was lame in front, but it is not unusual, and he appears to throw it off quickly. Not Impressive.—ln a mile gallop with Glanfalloch, which took 1.31 1-5, Greenfeast was going equally as well as the W.R.C. Handicap candidate. They ran the first three furlongs in 41sec, and the half-mile in 50 l-ssec. _ Bold Galloper.—The Dourq Handicap candidate Skyhawk, who is a bold galloper, ran seven furlongs in 1.28 4-5, the first three in 38 2-ssec. He has still to prove that he can run a "^Dropped Out.—Lady Lustre went out to gallop with Foxstar and Foxrose. but dropped out of the running on straightening up for home. The other pair went on to complete the five furlongs in 1.5, after covering the first two in 26sec. Saddle Slipped.—Despite the saddle slipping forward slightly, Foxada maintained her advantage over Advocate in the closing stages of a sevenfurlong task, running the distance in 1.33 4-5. Kept Together.—Lowry Bay and bir Wina finished together at the end of seven furlongs in 1.29 3-5. It was quite a good effort on the part of the latter. New Quarters.—Abdicate, who will enter G. W. New's stable after the local meeting, finished better than Sal's Pal and Sister Sal, the last-named show ing a tendency to run in, after six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, the first two in 26 4-ssec. , Smart Time.—Bridge Acre closed proceedings by slipping over half a mile in 49sec.
