HEAVY EARTHQUAKE
WESTERN ARGENTINA LONDON, January 16. A heavy earthquake occurred in western Argentina yesterday, it is feared, considerable loss of life. Many buildings and homes were wrecked in towns in San Juan Province, the area worst affected. More than 200 dead have been counted so far in one town in the province. Damage also occurred in-three other provinces. President Ramirez has ordered immediate help to be sent. Early today a train carrying medical and other supplies was on its way. Earthquake-registering equipment over 600 miles away at the capital, Buenos Aires, was shattered. The earthquake was recorded at the Dominion Observatory. The tracings began at two minutes past noon yesterday and continued for three hours, the shake being a very considerable one. The distance of the centre from Wellington was approximately 6000 miles.
