RECORD CATALOGUE

FOR NATIONAL SALES

Quite apart from the fact that a record catalogue will be offered at the National Thoroughbred Sales, to be held at Trentham on Friday, January 14, and Friday, January 21, the calibre of "the juveniles to come under the hammer promises to exceed all previous offerings. For the benefit of intending purchasers a parade of the 120 yearlings to be offered on the first day of the sales will be held on the preceding day, and the same procedure will be followed the next week. The parade will commence at 2.30 p.m. each day, and the sales will start at 9.45 a.m. Turn of Luck. —the Trentham trainer A, Goodman enjoyed a turn of luck during the holidays when . Glaciate, a highweight winner at Manawatu, went on to add the Rata Hurdles on the first day at Marton. Another member, The Whipper, took the scurry event at Wairarapa. For a Spell. —Young Bob, a member of A. E. Didham's string at Wingatui, raced badly at his two recent starts. He is to be given a spell. Lost Services. —Mimetical, who was purchased in this island last season by the Gore owner-trainer J. R. Cochrane with a view to jumping, broke down at Wyndham and was destroyed. In Good Order. —Although the inner tracks at Trentham are hard, the course proper carries a splendid sole of grass. Fed from the club's >own water supply, eight sprinklers deliver 12,500 gallons an hour, and the racing track should be in great order next Saturday. New Colours. —Whitley, a three-year-old by Theio from Odavarb, a halfsister to Orakau and Royal Glory, who was recently purchased by Mr. E. C. Haddock, of Marton, ran second to Divorced in the Orbell Handicap at Waikouaiti. Whitley has a good turn of speed, and should go on improving. Out of Action.— Trench Law was very lame after winning the Greymouth Cup, and he is likely to be off the scene for a time. Mauretania was also showing signs of soreness. Busy Time. —Maharajah had a busy time at Tauherenikau. On the first day he ran second in the. highweight event, and on the second day he was saddled tip twice to fill second place in each instance. Colin Boyd, a diminutive lad attached to P. Burgess's stable at Trentham, did his best to improve on the sequence at the final appearance, but his vigorous efforts did not meet with the reward they merited. Incidentally, Boyd rode his first winner when he pilbted Seropuri to victory in the juvenile event on the previous afternoon. Unlucky.— Mr. H. E. Edmunds, of Palmerston North, the owner-trainer of Financial, had to be content with second placings with the Inflation colt at J^uherenikau. In both instances Financial had to come round the leaders, with the result that the additional ground covered meant the difference between defeat and victory. All. Females. —Four of the winners at the Invercargill Meeting, Bonnie Chela, Macedoine, Aurora Australis, and Sascha, claim Salmagundi as their sire. With Royal Flight and Sing Sing gaining place-money Salmagundi's -progeny won £ 1245 in stakemoney. All six are fillies !or mares.

Beaten. — The Trentham-trained Great March went very close to victory in the highweight event on the ! first day at Tauherenikau, and he was i voted a good thing on the later day. However, he was taken to the front about three furlongs from home, and the early effort saw him beaten into third. Previously .he had done best when reserved for a final run. A Handful. —The Whipper has always proved rather reluctant to line up at the barrier, and his presence was rather upsetting each day at Tauherenikau. Being sent to the outside in the scurry event on Tuesday proved to be a blessing in disguise, for he secured a break at the start and it carried him through to victory. The turn of luck was overdue. Good Type. —Winner of : the Waiohine Stakes, Latin Bay had shown some promise in his earlier racing, and the dividend he returned was a false one. A member of D. J. Burgess's stable at Otaki, he won with something in hand. Fated.— On the first day at the Wairarapa Meeting Queen's Charm lost his rider at the jump-out, and was badly left on. the second day. However, he responded to hard riding to finish a poor third, and he might make amends. For a Spell. —Golden Barb, who showed a lot of pace at Wpodyille and again at Awapuni, these being her only two previous outings, came in on the second day of the Wairarapa Meeting to run third in the juvenile event. She has been showing signs of shinsoreness, and her owner, Mr. J. Jameson, of Masterton, intends turning her out on his property at Tuhitarata. Her place in J. P. Ryan's stable at Hastings will be taken by the Foxbridge—My Own filly, for whom Mr. Jameson paid 525 guinfeas at the National Sales last January. . ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. "303."—Griffin is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Lang Bian from La Poupee, and is trained by J. H. Jefferd at Hastings. There is no actual record of the inmates of stables, but once they have raced all particulars are given in a publication printed locally.
