REPRESSION IN FRANCE
LONDON, January 1. Light on the extent of the patriots' activities throughout France . was thrown by a Vichy radio announcetment, which began: "The Government has resolved to fight with increasing vigour against the banditry and terrorism which continues to show itself in our towns and villages in a most odious manner, causing widespread un- ; rest." ; Changes in the security personnel, it I was stated, have been made "for the i purpose of showing the Government's I wish to maintain order and spare the I country the horrors of the civil war with which it is threatened." The changes include the creation of the post of Secretary of State, to which M. Marcel Lemoine is appointed. M. Lemoine, it was stated, has given proof as prefect of Marseilles of having the necessary qualifications. -M. Joseph. Darnand, SeciSetary-General to the Militia, has been appointed Secretary of State for the Maintenance of Order. This post replaces that of General Secretary of Police, the holder of which, M. Bouquet, has resigned.
