CITY COUNCIL REMITS
Motions regarding remits to the Municipal Conference, of which notice had been given by Councillor J. D. Sievwright, were accepted by the Wellington City Council on Friday, when it was decided that remits should be sent forward on the following subjects;— The abolition of further collection by the Government of moneys for the War Insurance Fund; the amendment of the law so that all hospital and charitable aid costs should be met by the Consolidated Fund to avoid a double and unjust tax on ratepayers; expressing the desire of all local bodies that the whole of the charges for hospitals and charitable aid institutions should be paid out of the Social Security Fund and the State Consolidated Revenue, and that the special charge on ratepayers over and above such taxation should be entirely remitted.
The council placed it on record that it did not approve "of any remit going forward to the conference the object of which was to alter the existing law, which at present provides for a fair and equitable system of taking ratepayers' property for street widening or other objects necessary for the city's advancement.
