JAP TRANSPORTS HIT

SYDNEY, December 17. Two 5000-ton ' Japanese transports laden with troops and equipment have been bombed and left burning off Dili, in Portuguese Timor, says General Mac Arthurs communique today, and heavy casualties were inflicted on enemy personnel. An escorting destroyer was also attacked and probably damaged. Allied medium bombers and longrange fighters swept over the convoy at a low level. In the same area, two barges were sunk and six schooners damaged. ; In support of the landing operations at Arawe; targets in New Britain were again heavily pounded from the :aii\ Liberators dropped 92 tons of bombs on the Cape Gloucester area, and Gasmata received 32 tons.
