THE A.N.A. CLUB
GAY AS A. CHRISTMAS TREE
: Tlie A.N.A. Club is looking very gay this weekend, all the rooms having been decorated in Christmas regalia for the club's three-day celebration of the' festive season.1 Scarlet wreaths and giant holly, silver stars and bells, gargantuan candles, and masses of glorious red and white flowers have made all the rooms as gay as a Christmas tree. Six large Christmas cakes, decorated with emblems of the Services, have been provided, two for each night. ; Three of these cakes were the gift of the English-speaking Union and the others were given by the A.N.A. comforts committee, which also provided the special cakes included in the supper fare, £10 for. the prizes for "lucky ticket" holders, and the winners of novelty dances, and the new electrical dance music equipment which was used for the first time last night during the supper interval. The festivities, which are completely informal, commenced with the dance last night, when delightful floor shows were presented by Miss Ngaire Harrison, the winner of the Australasian Society of Operatic Dancing Scholarship, and. Miss Pat Read, both pupils of Miss Estelle Beere. Sweets were distributed by girls of the club, and during supper Mr; J. M. A. Ilott, a member of the executive, welcomed the guests, particularly those from overseas. Mr. Ilott wished them all tha happiest Christmas that they could have in the circumstances, and exj pressed the hope that 1944 woulcf bring world peace and that all would be celebrating Christmas in their own homes. So long, however, as the war lasted the A.N.A. Club, he said, would also keep going, and would do its best to provide a home-like atmosphere for men serving in the forces. The Christmas cakes were cut by three returned New Zealand servicemen—a soldier, a sailor, and an airman. Mrs. A. McKinnon was in charge last night. of the dancing. Miss Betty McLean will be in charge tonight, when evening dress will be worn by the girls, and when dance items will be presented, by Miss Emily McKen-' zie, another of Miss Beere's pupils, and tomorrow night Miss Kay Farquhar will be in charge and pupils of Miss Hazel Martin will provide the dance interlude entertainment. Mrs. H. F. O'Leary, Mrs. R. B. Gibbons, and Miss Moya Hempton were responsible for the decorating of the club, and Mrs. Eric Lu^e is in charge of the supper arrangements.
