CHARTER FOR WOMEN

Rec. 12.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 23. An Australian women's charter 01 about 5000 words was adopted by the Australian Women's Conference, which has now ended. It demands, among other things, an endowment from the Commonwealth Government to "women home-makers" of at least 30s a week. The chairman, Mrs. Jessie Street, described the recommendation as "epoch making."

The charter demands improvement in the legal status of women, including amendments to the Married Women's Property Act to provide for a community of interest in property acquired after marriage by either party other than any obtained by inheritance. The full charter embodies all the resolutions passed by the conference. It demands that no discrimination shall be made in the rights and responsibilities of men and women as citizens, equal pay for work, and encouragement for women to take part in all phases of public life. The confei-ence also seeks "wide representation" for women at the international peace conference.
