SQUADRON LEADER BALL
Squadron Leader William A. C. Ball, whose death is officially presumed, was the only son of Mrs. W. Herbert, Faraparaumu Beach, and brother of Mrs. J. Clark, Petone. In October, 1939, Squadron Leader Ball joined the cleri-
cal staff of the R.N.Z.A.F., but was later transferred to air crew, and, after receiving his commission as an observer, left New Zealand on December 18, 1940, for service overseas. He was first posted to the Middle East and took part in many raids on wide-ly-scattered targets, including Greece, Libya, and Italy. He was transferred to Malta for two months, after which he flew from Egypt across Africa to Lagos and then went by boat to England. From England he made over 40 raids on targets in Europe, including the 1000-bomber raids on Cologne and the Ruhr. He was mentioned in dispatches in the 1943 New Year Honours List. Just prior to being reported missing on March 9, Squadron Leader Ball was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader. He was an old boy of Nelson College and was keenly interested in sport. Before entering the Air Force he was a member of the staff of the T. and G. Insurance Company. •
