BEYOND GOMEL
RUSSIANS' FIRM HOLD
Rec. 11 a.m.
Rec. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 17. The Russians have a firm hold on the raihv;iy behind Gomel between Ilechitr.a and Kalinkovichi junction, near Mozyr, according to the latest Moscow messages. While one force yesterday drove west from Demcchi and captured Babichi, 30 miles east of Kalinkovichi, I another took Saltanovo, .iust north-west j f.f .Rcchitsa. Thus both Rechilsa, which I is on the west bank of the Dnieper, | and Gomel itself seem likely to be taken in the rear. Tiiis offensive is linked with the advance south of the Pripet Marshes, j where Korosten is closely threatened i by movements to the north and south !
of the town, as well as directly along the road from Kiev. The principal German reaction continues to be on live south side of the Russian salient between Zhitomir ar.d t Bel Tscrkov. There- is no slackening of the German counter-attacks in this ! area, whore reformed infantry units land lar.:te tank formations are trying to regain important positions.—B.O.W,
