COLLEGE DEBATE
. The annual debate for the Gow Scroll between representatives from the Hutt Valley High School and those frond Rongotai College took place last Friday. The subject was "That the aim of modern advertising has been more to enrich the manufacturer than to serve the community." The teams were:— Hutt (affirmative): Heyman, Harris, and Owens. Rongotai: Berry, Burney, and .Termyn. The judge, Mr. A.. Treadwell, in an interesting and instructive summing up of the debate, commended all the speakers, particularly Beny, of Rongotai, and Heyman, of Hutt Valley High School. He declared Rongotai the winners. The contest was inaugurated in 1932. Hutt Valley has won the scroll five times and Rongotai College seven times. ; ,
The McKenzie Swimming Baths, Petone, were declared open for the season last Saturday by the member for Hutt. Mr. Nash. The Hon. J. Cumming, M.L.C., also spoke, and as a member of the Petone borough said he hoped the council would be able to improve the conditions at the baths during the season." \* "■' " "■■":". ' '.:.
