HONOUR TO LORD MAYOR
H.A.C. CEREMONIAL
(Special P.A. Correspondent.) Rec. 12.40 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 9. A pageantry unusual in wartime added a dash, of colour to a luncheon to the new Lord Mayor of London, Sir Frank Newson-Smith. He is a member of the Honourable Artillery Company, and at the reception pikemen and musketeers wearing bright Seventeenth Century steel helmets, scarlet hose (the former uniform of the H.A.C.), formed a square around him and also stood behind his chair.
There was a rousing reception for Mr. Churchill, who jauntily kept in step with the music as he walked alone in the procession, following the Lord Mayor to the table. He appeared stern, as though realising that he was to make an important speech directly following those of Stalin and Hitler.
It was commented while he paid a very warm tribute to Russia his speech was chiefly for home consumption, warning those who are over-optimistic against early ending of the war, and also against too early return to party politics.
Those present included Field-Mar-shal Smuts, Mr. Jordan, Mr. Stanley Bruce, and Mr. Vincent Massey.
HOW NAZIS TREAT. RUSSIANS
LONDON, November 9. An R.A.F. fighter pilot repatriated from Germany described the German treatment of Russian prisoners of war as not brutality but assassination. He added that 8000 Russian prisoners in one camp were treated like mangy dogs. The daily ration was one kilo of bread for six men. As a result the camp mortality rate was more than 50 per cent.
