Chronicle and Comment

BY PERCY FLAGE

U.S. Marines, Melisande, have nothing to do with the Beefeaters. * ■ * # Hitler's armies recede as they cede old territory. * * * Husband (in court): "When I asked, my father what kind of girl he thought I should marry he said, 'Well, boy, your experiences at home should tell you to choose one who is dumb.'" * > * * IT GOES FURTHER. A tip for those who feel inclined to frown— Eat your bread and butter •uMop apisdn " • WINSH. *-. » * Starvation. s The spectre of famine hangs over Rome and the Nazi-occupied cities of Northern Italy, says a report from the Italian frontier that came from Berne. The Germans have requisitioned all available food supplies, and the Rome radio has appealed to farmers and food producers to bring food into the city. The Italians have heard of Greece and Poland. They know, as the world knows, that the most faithful camp follower Hitler has is starvation. * * * ' WHAT'S IN A NAME? Running to form, our radio announcers informed tis that "Massydoine" was successful in the main event at Gore on Labour Day. This does not appear to be the dictionary pronunciation of the apt name Macedoine. 'it surprises to find that this classicallooking word means cook's material. K. The reasoning—please. * # # INFORMATION. In reply to D.D., who has bet his'1 friend a dollar that the novelist, Hugh Walpole, was born in England, and is still writing oversea. You lose. It was in 1884 that Walpole, son of the Vicar of St. Mary's, Parnell, was born. When he was four , or five years old his parents left Auckland and made their home in New York. A year or more ago, Walpole, one of England's best novelists, died. Many residents of Parnell still remem- . ber him as a small, brown-eyed boy sitting very quietly in the vicarage pew at St. Mary's. * * * ♦ A FAIR COW. Said Strawberry to Polly on the farm:. I can see no reason for alarm, In fact this latest ration Will put us in the fashion And add a new importance to our . charm: If I hear the "Cockie" utter A scheme to wangle butter I'll kick him'on the bucket or the arm! And the only thing I fear Is the butter racketeer For he's the sort of COW that does the harm. H. GALLAGHER. * * * SHELL SHOCK. Military psychiatrists, who have been, using a form of mild hypnosis to explore depths of a soldier's subconscious mind, declare that shell shock as' an incurable mental condition does not exist. What does exist, they said, is a powerful inner conflict that sometimes is capable of rendering soldiers almost entirely unfit for military service. It arises out of the clash between the soldier's ideals and his most human instincts. On one hand is his love of country and his desire to do his duty under fire; on the other is the plain natural fear and the instinct of selfpreservation that leap into action among ear-splitting noises, hunger, fatigue, and the sight of maimed comrades. The specific causes of that conflict in individuals can be identified and- cleared away. The percentage of.. men "disabled" by mental trouble after combat duty is going down.
