OBITUARY

DR. R. A. SHORE

The death occurred today after a brief illness of Dr. Kobert Alexander Shore, Deputy Director-General of Health. Dr. Shore's long association with hospital administration brought him into touch with hospital authorities throughout the Dominion, among whom he was very highly respected. Dr. Shore was born at Kaitangata in 1884. He was educated at the Otago Boys' High School and the Medical School, topping his class in medicine in 1908, when he obtained his medical

degrees. After qualifying, he practised in Mataura and Cromwell, and in 1924 joined the Department of Health as Medical Qfficer of Health at Dunedin. Later he was transferred to a similar post in Wellington. In 1930 he was appointed Director of the Division of Hospitals, a post he held until 1940, when he was appointed Deputy Director-General of Health,-a position he.had filled on many previous occasions in an acting capacity. He was well known for his close connection with the works of the various boards attached to the department, and was chairman of the Nurses and Midwives Registration Board, Masseurs Registration Board, and the Opticians Board. He was chairman also of the Dominion Advisory Board of the Federation of Health Camps, and on the department's side he took a major part in the establishment of health camps throughout the country. He will be greatly missed, hot only because of his exceptional knowledge and experience j in all phases of the department's work, but because of his kindly disposition and his readiness; at all times xo help anyone .who needed his advice and assistance.

Dr. Shore was a prominent bowler, and was a member of the Hataitai Club at the time of his death. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family of four. -

Through falling down the hold of a ship this morning, Mr. D. Gemmell, Park Road, Belmont, labourer, injured his back. The Free Ambulance took him to hospital.
