Heavy Fighting Raging

LONDON, October 8., Tonight's Moscow communique says that heavy fighting* continued tbday on the western bank of the River Dnieper. The Russians also report more advances towards Vitebsk and around Nevel. The communique says that the heavy fighting took place where Red Army troops are striving to enlarge their bridgeheads^ According to one Moscow correspondent the Russians have ferried tanks across the river and these are now in action. • - , ■ Some 300 miles further north, Soviet forces fighting their way towards Vitebsk, have made advances up to 71 miles and recaptured more than 150 places. Further north still, the Russians have followed up the. capture of Nevel with other advances and retaken 60 towns and villages. * .... In the extreme south the Red N Army is mopping up the remnants of the Germans on the Taman Peninsula. On all fronts the number of tanks destroyed during the day was 50 and the number of planes shot down was 87.
