OTAKI MEETING

GOOD FIELDS CARDED

Splendid fields are carded for the Otaki Maori Meeting tomorrow; indeed, the Puhi Maiden has been divided into two separate races, the second and fifth, and provision has had to be made for the Katihiku Hack Handicap and the Mema Champion Hack Handicap to be run in divisions. A number of horses are down for their first outings in the current term, but there is plenty of recent form to assist enthusiasts. Trains leave Wellington at 8.55 a.m. and 9.50 a.m. The probability is that the track will be a trifle soft, more particularly along the back stretch, and horses favoured under'the anticipated conditions are:— Kapiti Hurdles.—Sandy Cape, PoHuka, Astute. Believe, 7.7. Tristan, Sir Fox, Beneve, 7.7. FINALS FOR OTAKI O.C. PALMERSTON N., This Day. Six of the twelve acceptors for the Ling Memorial Handicap at Otaki are trained at* Awapuni. They were given their final.gallops under favourable conditions yesterday morning, the flags being 27ft out on the course proper, where the going was slow. Classform (H. P. Stewart) came home very smoothly at the end of seven _ furlongs, Financial (R. B. Ireland) joining iA for the last five. They ran the last three in 41 4-ssec and the last five in 1.10 2-5. ' . , Te Kawiti (W. J. Stevens) was just in front of Gladynev (A. S. Ewan) atthe end of a mile in 1.54, the last three in 41 4-ssec. Both went well. Don Quex (Si Waddell) went with Rink (Ewan) in a similar task and Don Quex, on the inner, was a head m front at the finish. They were given time to find their feet, being just under evens for the first three furlongs, but the pace was good for the rest of the journey and they completed in 1.54 2"lovereign Lad (S. Waddell) went well with Borak (light boy) over seven furlongs, and there was little between them at the post. They ran the full distance in 1.39, the last three in 42sec. Colonel Rouge (M. Andrews) galloped seven furlongs with Greek Effort (N. Howard) and they were on terms at the post, both going easily. The seven was run in 1.40 2-5, and the last five in 1.10 2-5. Flying Ace (S. Waddell) was responsible for one of the best efforts of the morning over five furlongs. He was going strongly at the finish after covering the distance in 1.8 4-5. Happy Ending and Moderate were restricted to pace work, as was BenHippodrome (Ireland) shaded Conspicuous (light boy) over six furlongs in 1.24, the last three in 42sec. Vera Lynn (S. Waddell) was in front of Citizen (W. J. Stevens) at the end of five furlongs in 1.11 2-5. She was never under pressure. . Screen (A. G. Waddell), galloping deceptively, slipped over five in 1.7, the last three in just better than 40sec. Another brilliant effort was that of Sir Bradbury (Andrews) over half a mile. He was away smartly and came home in better than 39sec, to complete in 52sec, which was good in the going. Nighean (Andrews), anxious to go faster, was kept to even time over six furlongs. Kaitoa worked over a mile, being speeded up to run the last three in 41sec. Pennyroyal, with a companion, worked over five in 1.10, Pennyroyal being in front and going well at the finish. Vivid Night (A. Midwood) and Young Bill (Bowry) were schooled over four fences, Vivid Night being in front at the post. Both jumped well. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. Riding engagements for Otaki include: —W.
