NAVAL ACTION OFF BODO
Rec. 10.40 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 7. Reuter's correspondent aboard a cruiser with the Home Fleet reveals that the naval action against enemy shipping in the Bodo area, which was reported on Tuesday, resulted as fol-lows:—-An 8000-ton tanker was hit and left dt>wn by the stern and making for a beach; a 5000-ton freighter was hit three times by bombs and left with smoke pouring out of it; an 8000-ton freighter was left burning after it was hit: a loaded barge was bombed and run on to a beach; and a 500-ton freighter was left listing with the crew abandoning her. Other hits the effects of which were not observed brought the total number of vessels hit to eight. These vessels were merchantmen of between 3000 and 8000 tons, a landing barge, and a 1200-ton ore vessel. Admiral Fraser told other ships of the fleet in port to give a cheer as she entered harbour to the United States aircraft-carrier from which the torpedo planes and dive-bombers were launched.
