ELECTION RESULT

STATE OF PARTIES

CHANGE IN PROSPECT

Additional returns giving the final count of civilian votes recorded at the recent General Election point to the prospect of the Government's representation in the new Parliament being a little stronger than was indicated by the results of the preliminary count. The present figures—civilian voting finals and Forces' preliminaries —show that Palmerston North is added to the list of seats likely to be retained by the Government on voting by the Services. The final civilian count gives Mr. Mansford, the, Independent candidate, who was not opposed by the National Party, a majority of 20, but the preliminary totals of servicemen's votes follow the general trend of favouring the sitting member. That trend may also have an important bearing upon the final result for Eden, where Lt.-Col. Fortune (National) has had the greater part of his civilian vote majority reduced by the Services' voting already announced. The New Plymouth result would also appear to depend upon the leeway that can be made up by Mr. Frost (Labour) in the final count of the Services' vote. The following returns since yesterday show the final civilian count with the preliminary Services' voting figures:— Bay of Plenty. Civilinn Prelim. Present . final. Service, total.
