LONDON, October 7. Reports from Allied headquarters in the South-west Pacific say the Japanese have apparently abandoned their headquarters on Vella Lavella and Kulanibangra Islands, in the Solomons, vella Lavella has been pounded during the past two weeks, and a few days ago > Allied warships smashed many sea- • going barges evacuating troops from fKulambangra. The barges were headi'ing for Bougainville and Choiseul to the north-west.

RAIDERS OVER ENGLAND
LONDON, October 7. Two German raiders were destroyed .rtonight, when London had an alert for 'the second night running. Anti-air-craft guns put .tip one of the heaviest ibarrages since the days of the blitz •three years ago. The German raiders (spread out Over south-east England 'and East Anglia, and some came up ithe Thames Estuary. There were many ibomb incidents in the London area, land several people were killed. Several radio stations in Germany and German-occupied Europe went off ■the air tonight, including Deutschlandsender, the main Berlin station.
