A REPORT DENIED
GROWERS' CONTRACTS
The report published yesterday from Auckland to the effect that it had been decided by the Dominion Council of the Commercial Gardeners to advise growers not to sign contracts with the Government for the supply of basic vegetables, is denied by the Wellington headquarters of the council. The statement was attributed to Mr. C. R. Reader, secretary of the Auckland Commercial Gardeners' Society. The headquarters stated last night that negotiations had been proceeding for nine months, but the whole position from the council's viewpoint was most unsatisfactory. In some districts growers had signed; in others they_ had not. On September 30 the national executive (representing the Chinese and European executives) had made certain representations to the Prime Minister that were subsequently repeated in a six-page memorandum. These representations were still being considered, but at no time had the council advised growers not to sign. It had placed the position before them, as it saw it, and left the matter there. There was no question while negotiations were proceeding with the Government of advising growers or districts one way or the other.
