GAIN EAST OF VITEBSK
RUSSIAN FORCES
MUD HAMPERS TROOPS
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) Rec. 9 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 6.
The Russians have captured Kolishki, 30 miles east of. Vitebsk, and are battling on west of Kolishki hampered by mud but aided by intensified Red Air Force activity, says Reuters Moscow correspondent. Bombers are paying particular attention to the White Russian sectors of the Leningrad-Vitebsk-Odessa railway, the cutting of which is the Red Army's next major objective.
The Russians used well over 3,000,000 front-line troops in their summer offensive, says the British United Press military writer. Stalin's orders of the day have mentioned 91 different infantry and 39 different Guards divisions, two airborne and six cavalry divisions, 24 tank and 15 motorised brigades, and 24 air force divisions. From these official announcements more than 300 divisions are known to have participated in the fighting, not including the huge force in the Leningrad area. Official statements give another important fact. There has been only one mention of a! Far Eastern division. The tremendous power of the FarEastern army is untapped and remains as a deep reserve.
