A NEW TOMATO

A new tomato has been produced by the Victorian Department of Agriculture, the first to be developed in Australia for 50 years. Christened the Tatura Dwarf Globe, it is suitable for canning and home and market gardening, a good all-purpose tomato of the mid-season or main crop type. It is a prolific cropper, needs no staking, and covers its clusters of fruit so well with its leaves that they are not subject to damage by the sun. It was developed from a single plant selection made in 1928, and it was five years before a completely uniform line of plants was obtained. Since then 'results achieved by rigorous selection for improved fruit type have placed Tatura ahead of all dwarf varieties, and it will play an important part in the Australia-wide -food production drive as a labour-saver. . .
