JAPANESE IN RETREAT
Rec. 10.30 a.m. CHUNGKING, Oct. 5,
The Japanese forces in the Hsuancheng sector, 80 miles south of Nanking, began a general retreat after a battle in which they suffered considerable casualties, says the Associated Press. Chinese guerrillas operating behind the enemy lines are busily interfering with the movement of troops and supplies. In the other sectors between Hangchow and Nanking the Chinese are engaging the Japanese in fierce fighting. The Japanese air force was out in great strength yesterday attacking Kewiling and Shiukwan.
