PROGRAMME FOR FUTURE
CHRISTCHURCH, October 5. "While the difficult position resulting from the war is still with us. the improvement in the Pacific war warrants some confidence that the manpower problem will be lessened in the near future, and there are already signs that this is beginning," said Mr. M. H. Wynyard, motorists' representative on the Main Highways Board, when addressing the South Island Motor Union conference.
So far as the board was concerned, said Mr. Wynyard, the restriction of finance continued, and little progress on works other than bare maintenance was yet possible. However, the necessity for making adequate preparation, by way of surveys and other data, for the future prosecution of a full programme of works was recognised, and that aspect was receiving attention. Among other items, a bridge-building programme extending over several years was being prepared,
