COMPOST MAKING
DEMONSTRATION AT GARDENS
If the weather is fine, a large crowd fs expected at the Botanical Gardens on Saturday afternoon next to witness the compost-making demonstrations which are a part of the public education scheme of the Dig for Victory Campaign Committee. Various aspects of compost making, its use in building up the fertility of the soil and in checking plant diseases and its practical value to the backyard gardener who seeks big crops -from a small plot, will be dealt with by Dr. Guy Chapman, chairman of the Auckland Dig for Victory Committee The demonstration of compost making will be under the supervision of Mr. J. Stirling, foreman of the Botanical Gardens, who is also an authority with long experience of compost and its preparation. Visitors will be shown the special brick compost bins in use at the gardens and are invited to ask the experts any questions relating to this or any other subject likely to assist home gardeners. Other garden work which will be demonstrated will be seed sowing and pricking out of seedlings. The Caledonian pipe Band will provide music from-2 p.m., so that visitors may see the tulips before the compost demonstration begins. Extra trams will be provided from Courtenay Place to the Gardens.
