CANDIDATES' COMMITTEES
Under a provision of the Electoral Act, penalties are prescribed for persons who corruptly seek to interfere with or influence electors during the three days immediately before the poll. As a result, the practice is fairly general for candidates to disband their electoral committees so as to comply with this time limit. The Act states it to be an offence to distribute or deliver to any person at any time during these three days any papers that resemble ballot papers, together with any direction or indication as to how any person should vote. The law is particularly stringent against corrupt practices on the day of the poll, but it is not generally realised that the rather vague nature of some of the provisions gives extra *ires to those who are seeking the return of any candidate. As the acts of a committee cannot be dissociated from those of a candidate, the practice of disbanding committees three days before the poll is now widespread. i
