WELCOME REST

LONDON, September 19,

The battleships Warspite and Valiant, which bombarded Salerno, are now back in port. For two days they lay only a mile off the beach while they carried out the bombardment. They were repeatedly attacked, by German bombers and torpedo bombers, but kept on with their shelling. The captain of the Warspite said that his officers and men had.no rest for six days on end, and he was afraid to ask them to sit down in case they fell asleep. .
