RUINS IN NANTES

LONDON, September 18

The centre of Nantes was completely wiped out, and the city is without gas, electricity, and water, says the German-controlled Paris radio, quoting an eye-witness account of the Fortress raid on Thursday. "In 45 minutes," the radio said, "300 bombs transformed the city into a heap of ruins. It is estimated that 1500 buildings were destroyed." The American Eighth Bomber Command headquarters says examination of photographs shows a newly-built enemy destroyer sinking in Nantes harbour, and important submarine locks and concrete shelter pens heavily damaged. At La Pallice fires were started m oil and coal bunkering depots.
