THE CITY CAMP
SUCCESSFUL SEASON
The Wellington Boys' Institute brought its second "City Camp", to a close on Friday with a visit to Trentham Military Camp, where the boys were entertained by the Camp Commandant,' Colonel McHugh, and his officers and men.
The object of the "City Camp" has been to provide supervised recreation for the sons of men serving with the Forces or whose mothers are.engaged in essential industry, and numerous letters from grateful parents expressing appreciation of the programme clearly shows that this activity is filling a vital need. The membership has grown steadily throughout the fortnight's holiday, and over 300 children have taken part in the wide variety of interests from day to day. Outstanding events in this week's programme were the inauguration of the "Bryan O'Brien Story Hour Club' 1 which will in future be conducted by Mr. Bryan O'Brien on Monday afternoons in the Institute library after school hours. On Tuesday last a ferry trip to Day's Bay was made. The day was passed in canoeing, playing cricket, Soccer, and baseball in the pavilion grounds, bush rambles, and games on the beach. A feature of the "camp" was the lunch club, at which the speakers included the Rt. Rev. J. G. Lawton, Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, the Rev. Charles Wickham, Lecturer on Art, and Messrs. Bryan O'Brien and J. Pepper, who both spoke on adventures in the Antarctic. The daily sing-song at the close of the lunch club was greatly assisted by Lady Gay of 2ZB and Mr. J. Mann. .
