The Late Miss D. M. Arthur,

Miss Doris M. Arthur, M.A., formerly lady principal of the Napier Girls' High. School, whose death occurred recently in Napier, was born at Largs, Scotland, and came from a family prominent in educational circles in Scotland, her father being the late Mr. James Arthur, Professor of Mathematics at the Glasgow University. Miss Arthur's association with the school extended from February 2, 1924, when she-was appointed first assistant, assuming the position of lady principal on June 1, 1926, until her retirement on September 11, 1939, owing to ill health. Miss Arthur possessed a distinguished record of achievements, both school and college. She was predeceased by a brother and sister, and her only living relative is Mrs. Sheila Stratford, of Otaki. Rooms Spring-cleaned. The interior of the British Sailors' Society's rooms at 138 Wakefield Street have recently been spring cleaned and given a fresh coat of cream paint. There are always flowers in the rooms, which provide the men visiting port a homely, attractive place in which to spend their shore leave. Another Vacation Dance. Another "vacation dance" in aid of Plunket Society funds will be held at the Parish Hall, Karori, on Wednesday, commencing at 7.45 p.m. East Harbour Dance. The East Harbour Plunket Society has decided to hold its annual dance this year at the Day's Bay Pavilion on Saturday, September 18. This function has always been regarded as the district's social eyent of the year, and has been the chief means of raising much-needed funds. Arrangements have been made for a well-known orchestra to be in attendance, and a homemade supper will be provided by the ladies pi; the committee.
